Poetry Appreciation

Status:Active, open to new members
Group leader:
When: Monthly on Tuesday afternoons 2:00 pm-4:00 pm
2nd Tuesday of the month
Venue: Member's home

The aim of the group is to enjoy poetry; we do not write poetry, although members are encouraged to if that is their wish. Neither do we analyse poetry in a formal sense, as it is not meant to be an academic group, but often the poems we read lead to interesting and animated discussion.

We choose a topic at each meeting to find poems for the next meeting, which can be quite a challenge. We read a very wide range of poems, taken from an extensive time period. The group chooses a different topic each month from a list which we have selected together. A recent topic – Mountains and Hills – is very broad and could embrace poems from any nationality in translation, and in any time from Anglo-Saxon to the present day. We sometimes opt for a more specific topic, such as 17th Century English metaphysical poetry. And we could look at anything in between!

If you love reading and listening to poetry, and partaking in some interesting discussion, contact the Group Leader for more details about joining the group.
