Chepstow Benthyg
Are you keen on saving money, helping save the planet and making some new friends. If so then the Chepstow Benthyg is the place for you.
Benthyg is the Welsh word for “lend” or “borrow”, and a Benthyg is just like a book library but for things, that you don’t use very often, don’t have space for or can’t afford. For a minimal price. The idea of libraries of things is not only to save people money and space but also to help people live more sustainably by sharing resources and keeping things in use for as long as possible.
Items available to borrow include gardening, Kitchen, DIY tools, camping equipment and much more.
There are three established Benthygs in the area in Monmouth, Caldicot and Abergavenny. What aim to do is establish one in Chepstow and we would like some of your help to make it happen. We have secured a Town centre site to base it from. So what we are looking for are some volunteers to make it happen. Therefore we need you.
Are you able to
- Meet and greet all visitors by creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere
- Check items in and out following correct processes & procedures
- Work as part of a team to operate the premises at fixed, regular times.
- Take receipt of donations and adding them to the library
- Take payments
- Check items before and after borrowing.
- Keep a record of items borrowed
Whilst as a volunteer, We can provide you with.
- Discounted borrowing
- Become part of a team of local volunteers within the wide Benthyg network, all cheering you on
- Learn new skills like PAT testing, event planning, digital skills, etc.
- Training where you can learn at your own speed
If this is something that appeals to you, than we need you.
If you are interested or want more information, please contact Gareth John, Circular Economy Project Officer. Phone number: 07811824277, email: Garethjohn@monmouthshire.gov.uk

Do you know anyone who could benefit from help with reading or writing?
Do you know anyone who could benefit from help with reading or writing?
Forest Read Easy Deal (FRED) has been helping adults improve their reading and writing in the Forest of Dean District for about ten years.
Working at the pace of the Reader, this is not time-limited and is not subject to tests or exams.
We provide one-to-one, free and confidential assistance through trained and supported volunteer coaches throughout the district.
We follow the programme set out in the “Turning Pages” manuals produced by the Shannon Trust (https://turningpages.shannontrust.org.uk/downloads/printables)
At present unfortunately we are unable to hold our usual sessions in person but are in contact with Readers remotely to provide some continuity.
We are still able to carry out assessments from contacts over the phone and line up Coach and Reader pairs for when we can return later in the year.
We have a number of trained coaches living within travelling distance of Chepstow, who would be able to set up sessions locally, and we would like to explore this possibility in 2021. We are unaware of any similar service operating in this part of Monmouthshire.
Our real challenge is finding new ways of contacting and engaging potential new Readers. We are very dependent on support agencies referring people to us or word of mouth through families and friends. It would be really helpful if you could let us know if there are individuals known to you who could benefit from the FRED approach.
If you would like more information about FRED, please let us know or look at our website www.forestreadeasydeal.org.uk, or our Facebook page @forestreadeasydeal where there are many examples of how learning to read in later life has greatly improved lives, or contact 07746 371353 email kris.ventrisfield@gmail.com

The Chepstow Society
The Chepstow Society is the town’s historical and amenity society.
We are a local volunteer-run charity, formed in 1948 to explore and promote the remarkable history of the town and to keep an eye on new developments.
The Society is a friendly and socially active group, and welcomes new members. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month (except August and December) in the Drill Hall, to hear a talk of local and/or historical interest, and hear about changes in the town and surrounding area.We also publish guides and booklets on local history, organise events and occasional excursions, and lead walks around the town for residents and visitors.
Membership for the year from 1st April 2026 is £12 per person.
For more information, see our website at www.chepstowsociety.co.uk and our Facebook page.

Research Studies and Trials
We are often asked to publicise these to our members. Where we do so it is because we believe it may be of interest to you although we are not endorsing or promoting the research study in any way. The Chepstow u3a Committee has not undertaken any checks or due diligence on the relevant department or the study itself and accepts no liability whatsoever if you decide to agree to participate. If you choose to take part in any study, you do so at your own risk and in your own capacity and not as a u3a member. You should make sure that you understand all the risks associated with any study before you sign up and ensure that you understand the time commitment, any restrictions and possible side effects. You should also ensure that, where relevant, you will be insured as part of the study.
