The Aims of Chepstow u3a

  • To promote lifelong learning by encouraging people in their Third Age to derive pleasure from pursuing old and new interests with other people in ways that exercise both mind and body.
  • The guiding principle in achieving this aim is through self-help shared learning, in a mutually supportive environment, where all members are on an equal footing.

Code of Conduct

Members are requested to comply with the Terms and Conditions of Membership

  • Abide by the terms and conditions of the Chepstow u3a Constitution. (see our Constitution below)
  • Treat fellow members with respect and courtesy at all times.
  • Comply with and support the decisions of the elected committee.
  • Advise the committee of any change in your personal details.

Our Guiding Principles

  • We are a friendly, supportive community
  • Everyone is a volunteer
  • Every group is run by a member for the members
  • Member involvement is what makes the u3a work: joining groups, starting groups, joining the committee
  • u3a does not support any political party, religion or commercial interest
  • We are a sponsorship, raffle ticket sales and charity collection-free zone

Our Effectiveness and Success Depends on Members:

  • Participating in the wide range of activity groups currently available
  • Employing their life experience, knowledge and expertise, thereby offering mutual support and friendship to others
  • Sharing the benefits of the u3a with their friends and acquaintances in order to attract new members

The Guiding Principles of the u3a Movement

The Third Age Principle

  • Membership of a u3a is open to all in their third age, which is defined not by a particular age but by a period in life when full-time employment has cease
  • Members of a u3a promote the values of lifelong learning and the positive attributes of belonging to a u3a.
  • Members of a u3a should do all they can to ensure that everyone who wishes to join a u3a can do so.

The Self-help Learning Principle

  • Members of a u3a form interest groups, covering as wide a range of topics and activities as they desire, by the membership for the membership
  • No qualifications are sought or offered. Learning is for its own sake, with enjoyment being the prime motive, not qualifications or awards
  • There is no distinction between the learners and the tutors; they are all members of a u3a.

The Mutual Aid Principle

  • Each u3a is a mutual aid organisation, operationally independent but a member of the Third Age Trust, which requires adherence to the guiding principles of the u3a movement
  • No payments are made to individual members for services rendered to any u3a
  • Each u3a is self-funded with membership subscriptions and costs kept as low as possible.
  • Outside financial assistance should only be sought if it does not imperil the integrity of the u3a movement.

Forward Planning and Risk Management

Our Development Plan is a short-term plan for projects that are either in the process of being implemented or about to be implemented while the Strategic Plan is a longer-term plan with a lot less detail. Ideas are taken from this and put into the Development Plan.

By the nature of its activities and charitable objects, Chepstow u3a is not subject to high levels of risk but as a charity with a membership now over 1100 and 80 plus activity groups the trustees do have a responsibility to ensure that it operates in accordance with charity law and good practice and that its members have an enjoyable and safe experience as they participate in activities in pursuit of its charitable objects. These risks have been set out in our Risk Register.

Chepstow u3a Constitution

Our Constitution was passed at the Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 2nd March 2021. It followed lengthy discussions in Committee and consultation with members and was passed unanimously. It included changes to our Charitable Purposes Clause which had been agreed between TAT and the Charities Commission.
