Hereford Road from the Abergavenny Roundabout
Times are approximate from Chepstow.
Skirrid cp, SO 329 164. Take the first right off the Hereford Road then left at the T junction and the cp is about 1 mile on the LH side. Free to NT members otherwise Pay and Display. (40 minutes)
Fro, SO 292 200. Take first left off Hereford Road, then take second right, follow winding narrow to T junction and turn right. Fork left just after Pantygelli pub (NP7 7HR). Cp is about 2 miles on LHS. Difficult to find – set off early if you haven’t been before. (50 minutes)
Gaer, SO 307 222. Turn left off the Hereford Road at Llanvihagel Crucorney. On the Llanvihangel to Llanthony road turn left up steep road opposite the Queens Head pub (NP7 7ND). The cp is about half a mile on the RHS. (45 minutes)
Llanthony Priory cp, SO 289 278, NP7 7NN. As above but keep going past the Queens Head until you get to Llanthony. Turn right and follow road in front of the Abbey into the cp. (1 hour)
Capel-y-Ffin NP7 7NP SO254315 w3w///divorcing.tasty.boldest. As above but keep going for 3.5mls. Very limited roadside parking so car sharing essential (65 minutes).
Grey Telephone Box, SO 285 211. As Gaer above but turn left to Forest Coal Pit before the Queens Head. After about 1 mile arrive at a road junction and park at side of road by phone box. (50 minutes)
Pont Cadwgan, SO 268 251. w3w ///galloping.jolt.bronzes As above but carry on past phone box for about 4 miles to cp on RHS. (55 minutes)
Blaen-y-Cwm, SO 254 284. w3w ///locate.reef.outgrown As above but keep going for another 4 miles or so until you reach the cp on the RHS (1 hour)
Black Hill, SO 288 328, HR2 0PL, w3w///overdone.seducing.flinch Turn left to Longtown and go through the village (it is LONG) and look for the sign on LHS to the Black Hill cp. Narrow lanes and a final turn uphill on the RHS. A bit difficult to find but where you have a choice of roads, don’t go downhill! The Post Code is for a farm which is close by but it needs to be tested by someone who knows the route. (1 hour 15 minutes)
Red Darren. SO 297 299, HR2 0NF. (nearest). Go uphill through Longtown then after village turn left into small lane sp Turnant. Follow narrow twisty road for approx. 3 miles to parking area. (Probably about 1 hour 15 minutes).
Abergavenny and Crickhowell
Byefield Lane cp Abergavenny, SO 297 141, NP7 5DL. Go into Abergavenny and turn left at The Angel Hotel up a narrow street, turn right and ignore the two car parks at the side of the road and then turn left after about 200 yards down a steep drive on the LHS to a large cp below the road. Free apart from Tuesdays. Alternatively, go along the Heads of Valleys Road and turn off to the Morrisons roundabout as normal. Turn right at the next roundabout then next right and the cp is about 300 yards on the RHS. (40 minutes). Allow a further 15 minutes to change into walking gear and walk to the bus station if you are catching a bus.
Parc Lodge Car Park: SO 288 166, NP7 7HU, w3w///uniform.sheepish.spike. Coming from Waitrose in Abergavenny on A4143, turn right on to A40 at the roundabout (going east), and then first left (Chapel Lane). Keep going and join Pentre Road going north (rightish). Parking on right hand side at the end of proper road. (50 mins)
Llanellen Village Hall. SO305109 NP7 9HN. From the roundabout at the end of the A40 dual take the 1st left A4042. Turn right immediately after crossing the Usk. Village hall is on RHS. £1 per car.
Crickhowell Beaufort St cp, NP8 1AD SO 219 184. w3w:///secrets.dumpling.dockers. At the Abergavenny end of the village on the A40 turn up road by Fire Station and then left into cp. Pay and Display – about £4 for more than 4 hours. (50 minutes)
Park Drive Llangattock. NP8 1PP (approx.) SO 212 177. Head for Llangattock via Abergavenny and maybe Crickhowell and then take the first turning on the left as you drive up the hill into Llangattock. Park in the road on the LHS. (AA: 50 mins)
Llanfoist Crossing NP7 9LP. Turn left off the Heads of the Valley Road and left again to Llanfoist. CP is on the RHS near Kia garage and Abergavenny Garden centre. w3w///doormat.listening.foggy (AA: 40 mins.)
Gilwern Wharf. SO 245147. w3w ///guru.deployed.excellent From Llanfoist above, carry on A4077 to Gilwern. At Gilwern triangle turn right to continue on A4077. Still in Gilwern turn left opposite the Corn Exchange pub into Church Rd. Turn right just before the bridge over the canal, car park is at the end of the dirt road (40mins).
Army Camp, SO 230 171. About 1 mile before Crickhowell on RHS of A40 on ‘slip road’ entrance to army camp. We can park in layby on LHS of A40 about 300 yards before this, but it is getting congested with heavy vehicles using the mobile café. (50 minutes)
Llanbedr VH, SO 239 203, NP8 1SR, w3w ///firework.stocky.splat. Take Crickhowell cp road but carry on, turn right and then left and go straight on for about 2 miles and then turn right to Llanbedr. VH is about 500 yards on RHS. 01873 811041, £3 per car. (AA: 50 minutes)
The Quarry, SO 235 229. Take the road as for Llanbedr VH but don’t take the right turn to Llanbedr – go straight on. After another 2 miles or so there is a big RH bend in the road and the Quarry cp is on the LHS. Limited space so share cars. If it is full you can carry on and park at the Hermitage about a mile further on. (AA: 55 minutes)
Ty-Mawr Farm Llanbedr, SO 235 206, NP8 1SY. Park in camping site on RHS just past the farm. 01873 810164 £5 per car donation in box. (AA: 50 minutes)
Cwmdu VH, SO 180 239, NP8 1RW, w3w///storyline.steepest.wand. Go through Crickhowell on A40 and turn right on the A479 to Talgarth. The VH is on the far side of the village. £1 per car donation in door to VH. Check with 01873 730684 that it is ok. (AA: 55 minutes)
Pengenfford, SO 174 296, LD3 0EP. As above but carry on and cp is just past the Dinas Castle pub. £2 donation in box at side of cp. (AA: 1 hour)
